A further development of the piston steam engine is the steam motor. A steam motor is a single or double acting steam engine with valve control, high speed with up to 1500rpm. The crankshaft corresponds essentially to that of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine. In contrast to the classic steam engine, a steam motor and all its components are accommodated in a compact housing very similar to that of a diesel engine. |

In 1933, the brothers George D. and William J. Besler built a light steam motor in a modified Travel-Air 2000 biplane, and so on April 20, 1933, the first flights in the public through. At only 80 kg dead weight of 150 hp engine was superior to all gasoline engines of its time. Due to the possibility of direct reversal of the direction of rotation of the steam engine needed only 30 m of runway length for landing. | |
